Again, NAFDAC Shuts 250 Factories Producing Fake Drinks In Abia

0

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has once again closed down the notorious Cemetery Market in Aba, Abia State.

This marks the second time in two years that such an action has been taken, as confirmed by NAFDAC’s Director General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, in a statement on Tuesday.

She referred to this latest raid as “the most decisive action in the history of the market,” adding that NAFDAC uncovered and seized counterfeit food and beverage products valued at over ₦5 billion during the operation, which was named Operation Clean Up Aba.

“This is a significant step toward protecting public health and fighting the spread of counterfeit goods in Nigeria,” Adeyeye stated.

The operation revealed more than 240 makeshift factories producing fake products in unsanitary conditions.

These factories were found to be using harmful chemicals, contaminated water, and recycled bottles to make counterfeit versions of popular brands such as Hennessy, Seaman Schnapps, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Peak Milk, and Hollandia Yoghurt.

“These criminals use unsafe water sources, saccharin, artificial colorants, and other harmful chemicals that are not safe for consumption. They also use cheaper sugars and starches in place of fruits or grapes for alcoholic beverages,” Adeyeye explained.

Over 1,500 cartons of counterfeit products were destroyed on-site, with the total value of the seized and destroyed items estimated at ₦5 billion.

Additionally, the operation uncovered three warehouses storing expired Hollandia Yoghurt, which was being held for revalidation on January 22.

Adeyeye thanked the Abia State Government, particularly Governor Alex Otti, for their support in the operation and encouraged Nigerians to remain alert and report any suspicious products to their local NAFDAC office.

“The continuous support from Governor Otti, the Mayor of Aba South, and the interim market management committee has been instrumental to the success of Operation Clean Up Aba,” she noted.

She concluded by reaffirming NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting public health and eliminating fake and substandard products from Nigerian markets.

The Cemetery Market has been notorious for the production of counterfeit alcoholic drinks, carbonated beverages, and food items.

How To Build Healthy Self-Esteem

0

Self-esteem is how we view ourselves. When we have healthy self-esteem, we tend to feel positive about ourselves and life, which makes it easier to handle challenges.

In contrast, low self-esteem leads us to view ourselves and our situations negatively, making it harder to face difficulties.

How to Build Healthy Self-Esteem

To improve your self-esteem, start by identifying and challenging the negative beliefs you hold about yourself.

For example, you may tell yourself you’re “too dumb” to apply for a new job or think “nobody cares” about you.

  1. Acknowledge Negative Thoughts
Write down your negative thoughts in a journal or on paper. Reflect on when you first began believing them.
  2. Challenge Those Beliefs
Counter these negative thoughts with evidence. For instance, remind yourself of achievements like “I’m good at cryptic crosswords” or “My sister calls me every week.”
  3. List Positive Qualities
Write down positive attributes about yourself, such as “I’m thoughtful,” “I’m a great cook,” or “Others trust me.” Include compliments or positive comments you’ve received from others.
  4. Create a Positive List
Aim for at least five positive affirmations and add to this list regularly. Keep it somewhere visible to remind yourself of your worth.
  5. Embrace Growth
Past experiences may have affected your confidence, but it’s possible to develop a new self-perception and grow at any age.
Additional Techniques to Improve Self-Esteem
  • Recognize Your Strengths
Everyone excels at something, whether it’s cooking, singing, solving puzzles, or being a supportive friend. Engaging in activities you enjoy can improve your mood.
  • Cultivate Positive Relationships
If certain people bring you down, consider spending less time with them or expressing how their behavior affects you. Focus on building relationships with those who value and uplift you.
  • Practice Self-Kindness
Be gentle with yourself, especially during self-critical moments. Think about what advice you’d give a friend in a similar situation, as we often treat others more kindly than ourselves.
  • Develop Assertiveness
Assertiveness means respecting others’ opinions and needs while expecting the same in return. Observe assertive individuals and adopt their behaviors, staying true to yourself.
  • Learn to Say “No”
Those with low self-esteem often feel the need to say yes even when they want to decline, leading to resentment and burnout. Practice saying no in various ways until your boundaries are clear.
  • Challenge Yourself
It’s normal to feel nervous about trying new things, but those with healthy self-esteem don’t let fear stop them. Set small, achievable goals, like joining a class or attending a social event. Overcoming these challenges can greatly boost your self-esteem.
Conclusion

By following these strategies, you can work on building a healthier self-image and improving your self-worth.

How To Cope With Depression

0

It’s normal to feel down or depressed occasionally.

However, if these feelings last for two weeks or more and start affecting your daily life, it could be a sign of depression.

Depression can develop slowly, and people often don’t recognize or acknowledge the changes in their emotions or behavior.

It’s usually a partner, family member, or caregiver who first notices that help may be needed.

Coping Strategies If You’re Feeling Depressed
Stay Connected

Avoid isolating yourself. Social interaction can help improve your mood. Staying in touch with friends and family gives you support and someone to talk to when you’re feeling low.

Get Active

Engage in physical activity. Studies show that exercise can help boost your mood. If you haven’t exercised in a while, start with light activities like walking for 20 minutes daily.

Confront Your Fears

Don’t avoid challenges. It’s common to shy away from social situations or activities like going out or driving when feeling low. Facing these situations can help rebuild your confidence and make them easier over time.

Limit Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol can be problematic for some people. Drinking more than usual to cope may seem like a solution but can actually worsen depression.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Depression can affect your appetite—some people may not want to eat and risk becoming underweight, while others may overeat for comfort. If you’re concerned about changes in your appetite or the effects of antidepressants, talk to your doctor.

Establish a Routine

Depression can disrupt your sleep, leading to irregular sleep patterns. Try to wake up at your usual time and stick to your routine as much as possible. A consistent routine helps stabilize your eating habits, so aim to prepare and eat regular meals.

Conclusion

By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you can better manage and cope with feelings of depression.

How To Prevent Dandruff

Dandruff is a common condition that causes flaking of the skin on the scalp. Although it’s not contagious or serious, it can be embarrassing and difficult to control.

For mild dandruff, using a gentle daily shampoo may help.

If that doesn’t work, trying a medicated shampoo can offer relief, though the symptoms may return over time.

Dandruff is a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis.

How To Prevent Dandruff

You can reduce or prevent dandruff by following these helpful tips:

  1. Maintain Scalp Hygiene: Avoid touching your scalp, especially when it’s itchy, as scratching can irritate the skin and introduce dirt, worsening the condition.
  2. Find the Right Shampoo Routine: Use shampoo to manage oil levels, but don’t overuse hair products, as they can irritate the scalp.
  3. Manage Stress: Stress can worsen dandruff for some people. While it doesn’t directly cause dandruff, it can weaken your immune system, allowing the fungus Malassezia to flourish. Consider relaxation techniques like walking or yoga, and track stressful events to identify triggers.
  4. Get Fresh Air: Spending time outside can help reduce oil buildup on your scalp, promoting healthier skin.
  5. Massage Your Scalp: Gently massaging your scalp can help relieve dandruff symptoms.
  6. Brush Your Hair: Brush your hair when it’s damp (not wet) at least twice a day to help distribute natural oils.
  7. Protect Your Scalp from the Sun: Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your scalp from UV rays. Make sure the hat isn’t too tight to avoid friction.

By following these practices, you can manage and prevent dandruff effectively.

How To Prevent Eczema

0

Eczema, also referred to as atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition that causes dryness, itching, and inflammation.

While it is most commonly seen in children, it can occur at any age.

Read Also: Symptoms And Causes Of Eczema

Eczema is a chronic condition that tends to flare up periodically.

Although eczema can be uncomfortable, it is not contagious.

Individuals with eczema are also more likely to develop food allergies, hay fever, and asthma.

Consistent moisturizing and proper skincare can help reduce itching and prevent flare-ups.

Treatment may include the use of medicated ointments or creams.

Preventing Eczema

Establishing a consistent skincare routine can help reduce the frequency of eczema flare-ups. Here are some effective strategies to minimize skin dryness:

  1. Moisturize Frequently: Apply moisturizer at least twice a day. Use creams, ointments, shea butter, or lotions that help lock in moisture. Opt for products that are safe, effective, affordable, and free of fragrances.
  2. Petroleum Jelly for Babies: Applying petroleum jelly to your baby’s skin can help prevent atopic dermatitis.
  3. Daily Bathing: Take a warm (not hot) bath or shower for about 10 minutes.
  4. Use Gentle Cleansers: Choose a mild, non-soap cleanser free of dyes, alcohols, and fragrances. For young children, warm water alone is often enough—soap can irritate their sensitive skin. Avoid using washcloths or loofahs, as they can aggravate the skin.
  5. Pat Dry and Moisturize: After bathing, gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Apply moisturizer within three minutes while your skin is still damp.
Identifying and Avoiding Triggers

Eczema triggers vary from person to person, so it’s essential to identify and avoid irritants that could cause flare-ups.

Common triggers include:

  • Rough fabrics (e.g., wool)
  • Dry skin
  • Skin infections
  • Heat and sweating
  • Stress
  • Cleaning products
  • Dust mites and pet dander
  • Mold and pollen
  • Tobacco smoke
  • Cold, dry air
  • Fragrances and harsh chemicals

For infants and children, certain foods—such as eggs and cow’s milk—may also trigger flare-ups. It’s important to consult your child’s healthcare provider to identify potential food allergies.

Once you identify your triggers, work with your healthcare provider to manage your symptoms and prevent future flare-ups.

Trump Stops HIV Funding For Nigeria, Others

0

The US government has halted financial support for HIV treatment programs in Nigeria and other developing countries due to an executive order issued by former President Donald Trump.

This decision has caused a 90-day suspension of funds from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a US initiative that provides HIV/AIDS treatment across Africa and other regions.

The move follows an order signed by Trump on his first day in office, directing all government agencies managing foreign aid to pause their fund distributions.

PEPFAR, which has an annual budget of $6.5 billion, delivers essential HIV/AIDS treatment to more than 20.6 million people globally. Since its launch, the program has reportedly saved 26 million lives, becoming a crucial part of global health initiatives.

According to NPR, this suspension of PEPFAR funding may last at least three months unless the program receives an exemption.

Public health experts are expressing concern about the long-term effects, with some fearing that the Trump administration may eventually terminate the program entirely.

A US State Department spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, was quoted saying that the US “is no longer going to blindly dole out money with no return for the American people.”

Nigeria, one of the countries most heavily affected by HIV, stands to be significantly impacted by this funding pause.

With around two million Nigerians living with HIV, PEPFAR has been vital in providing life-saving treatments and strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

Over the years, PEPFAR has contributed more than $6 billion to Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS response, helping to save numerous lives and control the spread of the virus.

Coca-Cola Orders Massive Recall

0

Coca-Cola’s European bottling division announced a significant recall on Monday for Coke, Sprite, and other beverages after detecting harmful levels of chlorate, a substance that could pose health risks.

The company reported that cans and glass bottles containing high levels of chlorate were distributed across Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, France, and Luxembourg since November, according to Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium, as told to AFP.

While the company did not provide an exact number, they acknowledged that the recall involved a significant quantity of drinks.

Chlorate is a byproduct of chlorine disinfectants used in water treatment and food processing.

The European Food Safety Authority noted in 2015 that long-term exposure to chlorate could be a health concern, particularly for children with mild or moderate iodine deficiency.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium assured that most of the affected and unsold products had already been removed from store shelves and they were continuing efforts to remove any remaining products from the market.

However, the company’s French branch stated that independent experts had determined that the potential risk was “very low,” and no consumer complaints had been reported.

The recall only applies to affected batches of Coke and Fuze Tea distributed in France, with no recall order currently affecting the French market.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners apologized for the recall, which was discovered during a routine check at their production site in Ghent.

The affected products, which included brands such as Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss, and Tropico, had production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE.

The company also stated that they are working closely with the relevant authorities in each impacted market.

New Strain Of Bird Flu Confirmed In US

0

A new strain of bird flu has been detected at a duck farm in California, marking the first time this variant has been found in poultry in the U.S., according to an international agency.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reported that “highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N9” was confirmed at a commercial duck farm in Merced County, California, as stated in a report seen by AFP on Tuesday.

“This is the first confirmed case of HPAI H5N9 in poultry in the United States,” said WOAH, which monitors global animal diseases.

The outbreak, the origin of which remains unknown, was confirmed on January 13, and all 119,000 birds at the farm were culled.

The H5N1 bird flu strain, which is prevalent among animals in the U.S., was also found at the farm.

U.S. animal health authorities have initiated “comprehensive epidemiological investigations” and ramped up surveillance in response to the outbreak, WOAH added.

The emergence of this new bird flu strain in the U.S. coincides with President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the country from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The U.S. is the largest contributor to the WHO, which leads the global response to health emergencies.

Health experts have warned about the potential pandemic risk posed by bird flu, which has been showing signs of mutating as it spreads among animals and infects people in the U.S. Experts have been urging U.S. authorities to increase surveillance and share more information about the bird flu situation.

If the U.S. and the WHO cease cooperation and data sharing, tracking the spread of viruses globally will become more challenging.

The WHO expressed concern about the U.S. withdrawal, calling it “a concern for global health.”

So far, 67 people in the U.S. have contracted bird flu, with one death reported in early January, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

These infections were caused by direct contact with infected animals, and the WHO has stated that no human-to-human transmission has occurred.

However, scientists worry that if a person becomes infected with both bird flu and seasonal flu, the bird flu virus could mutate into a strain that spreads between humans, potentially leading to a human pandemic.
