Rivers Offers Free Surgeries To Mark Fubara’s 50th Birthday

The Rivers State Ministry of Health has announced plans to offer free surgical procedures and other healthcare services in all government-approved facilities across the state to mark Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s 50th birthday on Tuesday.

This initiative, which will last for one week, is organized in partnership with the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme, with 50 individuals expected to benefit from the free surgeries.

At a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, emphasized that the programme reflects the government’s dedication to accessible healthcare and social equity, aligning with Governor Fubara’s “Health For All Rivers” vision.

Oreh also highlighted various healthcare initiatives under the programme, such as the Sim Jara Health Scheme, expanded health coverage for vulnerable populations, and the mass enrollment of 50,000 vulnerable individuals across all 23 local government areas of the state.

According to the commissioner, the surgeries will be available to enrollees of the Sim Jara Health Scheme, and the programme will run from Monday to Friday.

Additionally, the government unveiled special health packages for specific groups, including residents of state-run care homes, pensioners, pregnant women, and individuals in correctional facilities.

“The first 50 individuals who sign up for the Sim Jara Health Plan and require surgery will qualify for free procedures as part of this celebration,” Oreh said. “This initiative underscores our commitment to financial protection and providing life-saving surgical services for our citizens.”

She further explained that the ministry would enroll vulnerable groups into the RIVCHPP Equity Health Plan, ensuring they receive comprehensive, free healthcare coverage and removing financial barriers to necessary medical treatments.

Dr. Vetty Agala, the Executive Secretary of RIVCHPP, elaborated on the services, stating that beneficiaries can receive up to 15 types of surgeries, including cesarean sections for pregnant women.

“If you’re enrolled in the Sim Jara Scheme or any informal sector schemes, you won’t be charged for surgeries, but you will pay 15% for your medications to help maintain the drug supply,” Dr. Agala explained.
