Tinubu Approves Recruitment Of Health Workers For Correctional Centres

President Bola Tinubu has authorized the hiring of 50 doctors and 100 nurses to work in correctional centres nationwide, aiming to enhance healthcare for inmates across the country.

This move is part of a broader strategy to address healthcare gaps within the Nigerian Correctional Service system.

The decision was announced in a statement on Thursday by Babatunde Alao, the Special Assistant to the Minister of Interior on Media.

He stated, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has approved the recruitment of 50 doctors and 100 nurses to meet the medical needs of inmates in correctional centres nationwide.”

Tunji-Ojo also revealed that medical doctors from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will now be posted to correctional centres during their service year to ensure the health and rights of vulnerable populations.

Additionally, the Minister disclosed the approval for extending the service of existing medical personnel in the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) beyond the retirement age to address short-term staffing shortages.

The recruitment initiative aims to reduce unemployment while filling a critical gap in healthcare services in correctional facilities, especially in states like Rivers, which have faced challenges with insufficient medical staff. “We are committed to improving the welfare of inmates and meeting their medical needs. This initiative not only benefits the inmates but also creates job opportunities for the youth, making it a win-win situation,” the Minister stated.

In addition to healthcare improvements, the Minister highlighted the completion of renovations at the Kuje Correctional Centre, which now features upgraded facilities, including new cells, better water supply, and a modernized hospital. “This is a clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to long-term solutions for the nation’s correctional facilities. What we are witnessing here is an investment in infrastructure that will stand the test of time,” he added.

The Minister also announced the approval for the establishment of a National Paramilitary Academy, which will offer degree programs in paramilitary studies to enhance national security. “This new institution will follow a model similar to the Nigerian Defence Academy, providing professional training to young Nigerians interested in serving in the security sector,” he said.

On visa issuance, the Minister mentioned the introduction of an online application system for Nigerian visas, allowing for processing times of 48 to 72 hours. “All Nigerian visas will now be applied for online and processed (approved or rejected) within 48 to 72 hours,” he stated.
