The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, second series.
A total of 2,577 candidates had their results withheld due to suspected examination malpractice, as reported by WAEC’s acting spokesperson, Moyosola Adesina.
Ms. Adesina shared that 65,023 candidates took the exam in Nigeria between October 25 and December 20, 2024, at various centers across the country. Out of these, 34,878 candidates (53.64%) achieved credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Candidates are encouraged to check their results at www.waecdirect.org and to access digital copies of their certificates at www.waec.org. Those with withheld results are advised to visit the WAEC Examination Malpractice Portal (https://waecinternational.org/complaints) to respond to the allegations.
WAEC will investigate all reported cases, including reviewing evidence and any representations from the candidates.
The Council’s relevant committee will then make a final decision, which will be communicated to the affected individuals.
Ms. Adesina highlighted that 16,886 (48.41%) of the successful candidates were male, while 17,992 (51.58%) were female.
In comparison, 42.16% of candidates in the 2022 second series and 44.29% in 2023 obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
This year’s result shows a 9.35% improvement in performance.
However, it is important to note that these results cannot be directly compared to WASSCE results for school candidates, as school candidates are required to sit for eight or nine subjects, whereas private candidates can choose to register for fewer subjects.
Out of all candidates, 62,354 (95.90%) had their results fully processed and released, while 2,669 (4.10%) have some subjects still being processed due to errors on their part.
Efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue and release their results soon.
Statistical analysis also shows that 43,923 candidates (67.55%) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, regardless of English Language or Mathematics.
The examination scripts were marked by 3,327 examiners at centers in Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Enugu, and Kaduna between January 15 and February 4.
For the first time, the 2024 second series WASSCE for private candidates was conducted in two modes—traditional paper-and-pen and a computer-based hybrid mode, allowing candidates to choose their preferred format during registration.
