Despite an appeal from the Federal Government, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke has firmly stated that the local government elections in the state will proceed as scheduled.
In a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor reiterated that the elections would take place, despite a call from the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, to suspend the polls.
Adeleke emphasized his commitment to the rule of law, rejecting any unlawful actions. “The election will go ahead, and its outcome will contribute to fast-tracked development at the local level. I urge our people to remain peaceful. Osun is a peaceful state,” the statement read, urging all parties and stakeholders to adhere to democratic principles.

He further stated, “Our people are prepared for the elections tomorrow. They are eager to elect their choice of chairmen and councillors. OSIEC has done an excellent job in preparing for the elections. Several political parties are participating, and I believe there will be a fair and level playing field for all.”
On Thursday, the Attorney-General had requested that Adeleke direct the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission to halt the elections, warning that they would be unconstitutional and invalid.
Fagbemi cited a recent Court of Appeal ruling in Akure that overturned a Federal High Court decision nullifying local government elections held under former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.
The ruling reinstated the ousted council chairmen, whose terms, according to the AGF, remain valid until October 2025.
Fagbemi warned that any election held during this period would not only be invalid, but also a serious violation of the Constitution, which Governor Adeleke has pledged to uphold.
