On Friday, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) uncovered a large operation in Umumeje village, Osisioma Ngwa, Abia State, where expired and counterfeit drugs were being handled.
NAFDAC shared the discovery in a statement on X, revealing that the illegal activity was being conducted in several buildings close to the Ariaria International Market.
The agency explained that expired medicines were being repackaged and revalidated for resale, presenting serious health risks to consumers. “The items seized included expired potassium chloride, allergy medications, immune boosters, and cholesterol treatments,” the statement noted.
Additionally, machines used for rebranding and altering expiry dates were found on-site. Despite attempts to contact the operator, he showed no concern for his detained family members. Several individuals connected to the illegal operation were arrested, though the main suspect remains at large.
NAFDAC confirmed that the operation, conducted in collaboration with security agencies, is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to combat the spread of counterfeit drugs.
The agency also reiterated its dedication to eliminating the distribution of substandard and falsified drugs in Nigeria and announced that it is reviewing its laws to impose tougher penalties on those involved in producing and distributing harmful pharmaceutical products.
