After hours of a standoff between workers at the Lagos State House of Assembly and security personnel blocking roads leading to the building, Speaker Mojisola Meranda was eventually allowed into her office and chaired the plenary session on Monday.
Meranda was escorted into the chamber by assembly workers and lawmakers, who strongly supported her.
She managed to preside over the session after a tense confrontation between security operatives, including police and Department of State Services officials, who attempted to access the chambers but were prevented by some lawmakers and workers.
The atmosphere in the chamber was charged as lawmakers chanted their support for Meranda, expressing their desire for her to remain as speaker.
Thirty-two out of the 40 lawmakers in the House passed a vote of confidence in Meranda, rejecting any attempts to force her to resign in favor of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Meranda became emotional as the lawmakers showed their support for her.
Throughout the standoff, the assembly grounds were heavily secured, with numerous security personnel and their vehicles stationed at the site.
