If your toothache lasts more than 2 days, it’s crucial to visit a dentist.
They can identify and treat the underlying problem, preventing further complications.
While waiting for your appointment, there are several ways to manage the pain.
See a dentist if your toothache:
- Persists for more than 2 days
- Doesn’t improve with pain relievers
- Is accompanied by fever, pain when biting, red gums, or a bad taste in your mouth
- Causes swelling in your cheek or jaw
Ways to Relieve Toothache Pain:
- Take pain relievers like ibuprofen or paracetamol (avoid aspirin for children under 16); ask a pharmacist for advice.
- Use an oral pain-relieving gel available at pharmacies or supermarkets.
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (not recommended for children).
- Stick to soft foods such as yogurt or scrambled eggs and avoid chewing on the affected side.
- Use a soft toothbrush and avoid flossing around the painful tooth.
- Stay away from sweet, very hot, or cold foods.
- Refrain from smoking, as it can worsen dental problems.
How to Rinse with Salt Water:
- Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water to help the salt dissolve.
- Rinse your mouth with the solution and spit it out—do not swallow.
- Repeat as needed.
Note: Children should avoid salt water rinses to prevent swallowing.
