After hours of confrontation between workers at the Lagos State House of Assembly and security officials who had stormed the chamber, Speaker Mojisola Meranda was finally able to access her office and preside over plenary on Monday.
Lawmakers and assembly workers provided strong protection for Meranda as she entered the chamber.
Despite attempts by security personnel, including police officers and Department of State Services (DSS) officials, to enter the assembly, they were met with resistance from some lawmakers and workers.
Tension was high in the chamber as lawmakers chanted in support of Meranda, making it clear that they wanted her to remain as Speaker.
During the stand-off, the assembly premises were heavily secured, with numerous security personnel and their vehicles stationed outside.
Thirty-six lawmakers, all supporting Meranda, passed a vote of confidence in her leadership, stating that attempts to have her resign in favor of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa would not succeed.
Meranda became emotional as the vote of confidence was passed, and the plenary was adjourned indefinitely.
Since then, the DSS and the assembly have exchanged statements regarding the presence of DSS operatives at the House.
The DSS claimed its personnel had been invited, while the assembly denied making such a request.
