Doctor Bags Seven Years Jail Term For N127m Fraud In Calabar

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced on Saturday that it has secured the conviction of Dr. Geraldine Orok, a medical doctor, for defrauding N127 million.

A Federal High Court in Calabar, Cross River State, presided over by Justice Rosemary Oghogho-rie, sentenced Dr. Orok to seven years in prison.

The EFCC’s Uyo Directorate prosecuted Dr. Orok on a 12-count charge, including forgery and the diversion of N127 million in funds.

One of the charges accuses her of forging a document—an Annual Return Form for Sharpnet Concept Limited—in November 2014.

She allegedly intended for the document, falsely signed by a director, Mrs. Rose Orok Ita, to be used as genuine.

Another charge states that in February 2019, Dr. Orok took possession of N45 million through a bank account for a project executed by ROK Projects Limited/Sharpnet Limited, knowing that the money was linked to a crime involving forgery.

Dr. Orok pleaded not guilty to the charges, which led to a trial beginning in 2019.

During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence and witnesses. After considering the evidence, Justice Oghogho-rie convicted Dr. Orok and sentenced her to seven years in prison.

Dr. Orok’s legal troubles began in 2019 when the directors of Sharpnet Concept Limited and ROK Project Limited filed a petition with the EFCC.

They accused her of forging and altering the companies’ documents to benefit herself by removing the original directors and claiming to be the second wife of the late Engr. Orok Okonkon Ita, who passed away in 2004.

Additionally, the petitioners alleged that Dr. Orok had made unauthorized changes to the companies’ records, including appointing a new company secretary and altering the registered company address in November 2014.

The Anambra State Police Command announced that its operatives, along with local vigilantes, have arrested Anthony Kosisochukwu Okafor in connection with the death of his 45-year-old brother, Emmanuel Okafor.

The 37-year-old suspect is from Adegbe Village, Abagana in the Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued by the Anambra Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, on Saturday.

According to the statement, Kosisochukwu admitted to having fought with his brother over a disagreement about the use of food supplies at home.

The statement emphasized that the incident is a troubling reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and family conflicts.

It stressed the importance of managing disagreements and emotions in a healthy and constructive manner to prevent tragic outcomes.

The case has been handed over to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka and will be brought to court once the investigation is completed.

 

Police Reacts As Abductors Of Ex-NYSC DG Demand N250m Ransom

The kidnappers of retired General Maharazu Tsiga, former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), have demanded a ransom of N250 million for his release.

A family source, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed on Saturday that the kidnappers’ leader contacted the family late on Friday, requesting the specified amount.

Tsiga, along with several other residents of Tsiga village in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, was abducted.

A local resident confirmed the kidnapping on Thursday, stating that the incident occurred on Wednesday when armed assailants attacked Tsiga’s home.

During the brief attack, two residents were injured, and one of the kidnappers was accidentally shot and killed by his own group.

The Katsina State Police Command confirmed Tsiga’s abduction on Friday, assuring the public that they are actively addressing the situation in collaboration with other security agencies.

Police spokesperson Abubakar Sadiq disclosed this during a briefing at the Command Headquarters, where he also reported the arrest of 45 suspects for various crimes in January 2025.

Sadiq explained that on February 6, 2025, the Bakori divisional police received a tip about armed bandits in Tsiga village.

However, by the time officers arrived, the kidnappers had already completed their mission. Katsina, along with other states in the North-Western and North-Central regions, continues to face frequent bandit attacks, including kidnappings, killings, and property destruction.

The criminal groups, operating from forests spanning several states, have been notorious for mass abductions, particularly targeting students.

In response, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda established the Katsina Community Watch Corps (KCWC) in 2023, comprising 2,000 vigilantes to support the military and police in combating these criminal groups.

Nnamdi Kanu Ordered To Appear In Court Monday

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has received a court order requiring him to appear for a hearing on Monday, February 10, 2025, before Justice Binta Nyako at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

This information was provided in a hearing notice obtained by our correspondent on Friday. The notice, dated January 22, 2025, was addressed to Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor.

Earlier, Kanu had requested that his case be transferred to a court in the South-East if no judge in Abuja, aside from Justice Nyako, was willing to handle it.

On September 24, 2024, during a court session, Kanu had asked Justice Nyako to recuse herself from his trial, citing a lack of confidence in her handling of the case.

Justice Nyako complied and transferred the case to Justice Tsoho.

However, Justice Tsoho later returned the case to Justice Nyako for continuation.

Kanu has since maintained that it would violate her own judicial order for Justice Nyako to preside over the case again and instructed his legal team to ensure she refrains from handling it.

In response to the hearing notice, Ejimakor expressed surprise, stating that they would attend the hearing with “bated breath.”

The hearing notice partially read, “Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015 – Hearing notice between the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Plaintiff) and Nnamdi Kanu (Defendant). This case will be transferred from the general cause list to the hearing paper for Monday, the 10th day of February 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in the forenoon and will come on to be heard on that day if the business of the court permits, or otherwise on some adjournment day of which you will receive no further notice.”

The notice also outlined the procedures for applying to postpone the hearing and emphasized that parties should present all evidence during the hearing, as failure to do so might result in being barred from presenting it later or incurring substantial costs.

Meanwhile, Kanu’s counsel, Ejimakor, reiterated their request for the case to be transferred to a High Court in the South-East in a letter dated January 30, 2025.

In the letter, Ejimakor referenced the recusal of Justice Nyako and argued that she no longer had jurisdiction over the case, which he claimed was binding. He further contended that because no other judge in the Abuja division was willing to take the case, it should be transferred to a division in the South-East, where the alleged offences had greater relevance.

Ejimakor requested that the court grant the transfer to prevent a miscarriage of justice for Kanu.

 

No Explosion At Warri Refinery – NNPCL

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has refuted rumors of an explosion at the Warri refinery.

The company clarified that the refinery is currently loading eight trucks of diesel and kerosene daily, following a deliberate reduction in operations on January 25.

In a statement on Friday, Olufemi Soneye, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, confirmed that reports of an explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) were completely false.

He explained that operations at WRPC Area 1 were intentionally scaled back to carry out necessary repairs on specific equipment, including field instruments, that were affecting steady operations.

These repairs are vital for ensuring the production of high-quality products, particularly Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Kerosene.

Soneye further stated that the routine maintenance was progressing as scheduled, and operations at Area 1 would resume in the coming days.

Despite the ongoing maintenance, AGO loading has been maintained at an average of eight trucks per day for the past 11 days, ensuring a consistent supply for truck loading operations.

Soneye emphasized that NNPCL remains committed to providing an uninterrupted product supply and thanked all stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during this necessary maintenance.
